An analysis about cohesive devices on The Jakarta Post article entiteled A Little Diversion on the Way to Lake Toba

Abstract: This research is about the use of cohesive devices on the Jakarta Post article entitled “A Little Diversion on the Way to Lake Toba”. The purpose is to investigate how the cohesive devices are used in the text. The research methodology used is descriptive method, which focuses on describing and analyzing the data based on the theories by Halliday and Hassan. The research analyzes 7 paragraphs. The research shows that most of the paragraphs use anaphora in referential cohesion. However, ellipsis and substitution do not exist in the article. The conclusion is every paragraph in the article uses cohesive devices which means personal reference, demonstrative reference, substitution & ellipsis, conjunction, and lexical cohesive devices
